A 2019 survey conducted by Ally Financial found that 69% of Americans would consider purchasing a used car.1
Of used car owners, most say they made their decision based on affordability. Attributes such as dealer or factory certification, repair/maintenance reports, and extended vehicle service contracts were looked upon favorably.
It’s relatively easy to find a used car for less than $10,000 that doesn’t need expensive service. Research reliability scores and affordable used cars with high safety rankings too. The used car market is filled with many choices, including these affordable models with the fewest check-engine related problems and least likely to need major repairs:
1. 2017 Subaru Outback
U.S. News & World Report ranked it #1 in 2017 wagons. The 2017 Outback is highly rated for its roomy seating and cargo capacity, along with newly added features for the model including a Touring trim and reverse automatic braking. It is also known for its handling on rough terrain along with high safety scores.
2. 2017 Honda Civic
A hatchback was introduced that year, adding to the choices of a sedan or coupe, as were the Civic Si and Type R models. The 2017 Civic gets up to 42 mpg highway and has a quiet, upscale cabin with spacious seats. Comfortable handling and numerous safety features are other standouts.
3. 2016 Toyota Prius
The fuel economy is up to 53 mpg highway and 58 mpg city. A quiet cabin, roomy seating, and plenty of cargo space make this compact hatchback appealing as well. Not to mention its elegant styling and high rankings for an affordable used hybrid car.
4. 2010 Toyota RAV4
Motorists can benefit from the reliability, safety scores, and low cost of ownership. Depending on your needs, you can find four-cylinder or V6 models with front- and all-wheel drive. The vehicle fits up to seven people. If the standard cloth upholstery isn’t enough, you may find a RAV4 with leather seating.
5. 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata
Who says you can’t own a top-rated, two-seat roadster for under $10K. The Miata is compact but offers enough horsepower for a lightweight roadster. Five- or six-speed manual transmissions were available as was an automatic transmission, so you can still find suitable used models with the composed handling, great fuel economy, and six-speaker audio system that every Miata offers.
6. 2009 Acura TL
A full redesign for the model year added a “beak” grille, a high-tech interior, and choices of 280 horsepower front-wheel drive and 305 horsepower all-wheel-drive models. Leather seats, a sunroof, and satellite radio come standard. Not to mention the TL is fit with a sport-tuned suspension to suit it for sports car buyers.
7. 2008 Toyota Highlander
This reliable midsize SUV has a U.S. News & World Report score of 8.8 out of 10. A 270-horsepower V6 engine was added for the 2008 model year, which came with standard front-wheel drive. The crossover SUV is also available with all-wheel drive and a gas/electric hybrid version. Plus, there’s the safety of seven airbags and a reconfigurable second-row seat to refine the interior to your needs.
