Kia issued a large recall in late February affecting 228,829 vehicles as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign NO. 20V088000. The impacted units include model year 2006-10 Sedona minivans built from June 15, 2005 through July 15, 2009. It also involves 2007-09 Kia Sorentos that were produced from June 15, 2006 through December 15, 2008.
The risk of an electrical short, which in turn could cause a fire in the engine compartment, is caused by a defect in the anti-lock brake system (ABS). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTHSA) said that the danger lies with an ABS module that remains energized even when the vehicle is off. Contact with moisture could cause a short in the module’s electrical circuit, potentially causing a “key-off” engine compartment fire.
However, the NTHSA said the performance of the brake system is not affected by the short circuit. It is estimated that 1% of vehicles with the ABS problem could have moisture damage associated with the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU), part of the ABS.
Can the Problem Be Fixed?
A dealer can fix the problem for free. There isn’t a specific root defect. Nonetheless, if your Sedona or Sorento is included in the recall, bring the vehicle in and they can install a relay in the main junction box. This relay will prevent power from reaching the hydraulic electronic control unit when the ignition switch is off.
You may not have been notified yet. Kia announced it will begin notifying vehicle owners April 10, but you can call either Kia directly (at 800-333-4542) or the NHTSA (888-327-4236 is its vehicle-safety hotline). Also, you can enter your car’s vehicle identification number on the administration’s website to learn whether your vehicle is included in the recall and to obtain more information.

A History of Recalls
As of yet, Kia has not determined how or why moisture enters the control unit. Similar issues have occurred with other vehicles, triggering recalls, including Hyundai Elantra and Elantra Touring models. Engine fire related recalls involving Kia and Hyundai cars, SUVs, and crossovers have occurred over the past few years, with causes ranging from high exhaust temperatures that can cause catalytic converter damage to faulty oil pans.
These issues have caught the attention of the NHTSA, which has opened an investigative probe into how Kia and Hyundai have handled the recalls and the resolutions they have implemented.
